The Tax Collector reminds property owners that the deadline for payment of 2011 real estate and tangible personal property taxes is Saturday, March 31, 2012. However, because the deadline this year falls on a Saturday, taxpayers who have delayed making their payment will be able to pay in person on Monday, April 2, 2012 until 5:00 pm without incurring a penalty. The Tax Collector reminds property owners that Wednesday is the last day to take advantage of the 4% discount. Payments must be postmarked or conducted online on or before November 30 to receive the discount rate. Taxpayers may also pay in person by Wednesday at one of the Tax Collector's Branch Office locations, to take advantage of the maximum discount. Payments postmarked after the November 30 deadline will not qualify for the 4% rate. Discount rates decrease one percentage point each month until March, at which time the full tax amount is due. Polk County Tax Collector Joe G. Tedder reports that the 2011 property tax notices to all of Polk County's property owners are being mailed out on October 29. "Property owners should be looking for their bills in the mail very soon," says Tedder. "We make every effort to inform taxpayers that their taxes are due regardless of whether they receive their bill. Florida law clearly places the burden of responsibility for payment of taxes on the property owner. So, every year we remind taxpayers to contact our offices if they do not receive their bill."

TEDDER: STATE OFFICIALS SHOULD TAKE ACTION

HAINES CITY TAX OFFICE SYSTEMS RESTORED

Due to a severe weather event in the final days of March, the Tax Collector's Haines City Service Center temporarily lost some electronic systems. As of April 29, all systems have been restored. During the service outage, the Haines City Tax Collector's Office staff was able to conuct motorist and tax transactions. However, various customer service features were affected and in some cases hand written receipts were required to be issued to customers.

KIDS TAG ART BRINGS OVER $26,000!

On Tuesday, April 12, 2011, Polk County Kids Tag Art presented the School Board with a check for $26,833 at their regular board meeting at the Bartow District Offices. This is the 5th year the Tax Collector's Office has hosted this art program in Polk County Schools. The total combined monies that have been raised for Polk art teachers exceeds $89,000 for the 5 year period, which represents 100% of proceeds. The major sponsor this year was MIDFLORIDA Credit Union. Other sponsors were Douglass Screen Printers, Alphagraphics, Polk Education Foundation, Junior Woman's Club of Lakeland, Lake Wales Arts Center, Polk Arts Alliance, Polk Museum of Art, Polk County Schools, and the Polk County Tax Collector's Office.

BEWARE OF TELEPHONE SCAM

The Polk County Tax Collector's Office received information that a telephone scam is circulating in Putnam County. A telephone recording is erroneously informing homeowners that they are behind in their property taxes and will lose their homestead exemption if the taxes are not paid by a certain date. Homeowners are then instructed to call a number and give their bank account routing numbers. Florida's Tax Collectors are not making these calls and warns property owners in Polk County to be aware and if they receive such a call, they should report the call to the Polk County Sheriff's Office at (863) 298-6200. Moreover, our customers should know they can also call the Tax Collector's Office at (863) 534-4700 with any questions they may have regarding their property tax accounts.

Those doing business in Polk and who haven't renewed your county local business tax receipt for 2010/2011 may find a Compliance Order in their mailbox. The Tax Collector's Office is sending out the Compliance Orders in an effort to get businesses to renw their county local business tax receipts before the maximum penalty is applied. TAX COLLECTOR'S BARTOW OFFICE WAS OPEN ON NEW YEAR'S EVE

Because New Year's Day fell on a Saturday, New Year's Eve (Friday) was the observed legal holiday for all county and many local government offices. However, the public was facing multiple multiple year end payment deadlines for mobile homes, heavy trucks, and 3% property tax payments.
