Deadline Looms: Teens Have One Week to Avoid New Driver’s Ed Requirement

After June 30, 2025, a new state law will increase Learner’s License requirements.

POLK COUNTY, Fla. – Big changes are coming to learner’s licenses in Florida. A new state law, which takes effect July 1, will increase requirements so that those who wish to secure a learner’s license must take a Driver’s Ed course in addition to the already required Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education course (TLSAE) and General Knowledge Exam.

However, a student can be exempt from this additional requirement if they complete the TLSAE course before July 1, 2025.

Students ages 14 to17 who wish to complete the TLSAE before July can access the providers available through the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) website, or linked here:

After June 30, and to ensure that families have access to approved providers of the new Driver’s Ed course, Polk County Schools and the Polk County Tax Collector will share an approved list of providers as soon as it becomes available.
