After July 31, 2025, a new state law will increase Learner’s License requirements.
POLK COUNTY, Fla. – Big changes are coming to learner’s licenses in Florida. A new state law, which was originally scheduled to take effect July 1, will now take effect August 1.
The new law will increase requirements so that those who wish to secure a learner’s license must complete a 6-hour Driver Education Training Safety (DETS) course, in addition to the already required General Knowledge Exam.
However, those who are 14 to 17 years of age can be exempt from this additional requirement if they complete the 4-hour Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course before August 1, 2025. Read more details and answers to FAQ on the State’s site here.
Students ages 14 to 17 who wish to complete the TLSAE before August 1 can access the providers available through the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) website, or linked here:
To ensure that families have access to approved providers of the new DETS course, Polk County Schools and the Polk County Tax Collector will share an approved list of providers as soon as it becomes available.
